Doing the Afternoon Activity Shuffle
Some want to play soccer, others must do dance. Add in music lessons, gymnastics or tae kwon do and it all sounds pretty complicated. Getting your kids to their after school activities isn't always pretty but we parents usually find a way to work it out. With a little pre-planning now, hopefully you can avoid any hassles later.
One of the greatest resources in Vermont for after school activities is the Flynn Center for Performing Arts. Take a look at what they've got going on this fall:
DANCE classes for kids focus not on perfection of rigid technique (which can hinder rather than help with confidence-building!) but on helping children to discover themselves to be unique, powerful, and expressive movers, and to translate their boundless energy and imaginations into joyful motion!
- CREATIVE DANCE, the foundation of the program, is offered for ages 3-11.
- There's also a fun FANTASY BALLET class for grades K-1
- TAP for grades 4-8 (with Lisa Hopkins - creator of the international touring sensation show "TAPKIDS!")
DRAMA classes for the kiddos emphasize individual expression, creative choice, and FUN! There are no chorus roles, no disappointments here - everyone gets to shine! Drama for kids has been shown to build confidence, an understanding of teamwork, and even compassion for others.
- Classes for Pre-schoolers through grade 3 focus on creative exploration
- Grades 4-8 add in some elements of improv comedy and musical theater
- High schoolers create a Broadway musical revue with a public performance in FlynnSpace!
The FlynnArts MUSIC program fills a gap in our community
- JAZZ for youngsters. Starting with grades 5-8 and going all the way to grade 12, the program nurtures young musicians in small combos with lots of individual attention. Kids learn from a team of working professional jazz artist/educators, jam together, and even perform in Burlington's First Night celebration and the Discover Jazz Festival in June!
- Morning PARENT-CHILD MUSIC-MAKING classes are in high demand and fill quickly, as tots and parents (yes, dads too!) enjoy experiencing multicultural music together.
Wondering if these classes are a good fit for your child? Don't wonder - find out! FlynnArts has an open house with FREE dance & drama classes for ages 1-13 during Burlington's South End Art Hop on Sat., Sept 6, where you can get a feel for the teachers and the classes. Signing up for the sample classes is encouraged as some fill up, but drop-ins are welcome if you're strolling by and there happens to be space!
Ah, these kids always keep us on our toes!
